Out of everything in the New 52, THIS bothers me the most

There’s been a lot of choices in DC Comics’ new universe that I haven’t cared for, but I’ve been very generous about them, instead focusing on the good aspects of the books (which there are a lot of as well).

But this, THIS is the first thing in the DCNU that has made me legitimately angry.

Basically, while drawing Deathstroke #0, Rob Liefeld straight up copied numerous panels from “Tales of the Teen Titans #44” (at least I believe it’s #44, someone else referred to it as #43; either way, it’s the issue that first told Deathstroke’s origin), only, you know, since he’s Rob Liefeld, they’re much worse than Perez’s panels.

Check out some side-by-side comparisions from the link above:

This panel is the worst. To quote my friends at Retcon Punch:

Panel 1: I must have missed the scene when they were in a horrible nuclear accident and their bodies were fused together. Neither Adeline nor Slade have a right leg, her right hand appears to be attached to his right arm, and I think his left hand is…I don’t really want to know where.

And you know, I don’t mind artists doing homages sometimes. And I admit that part of the reason this angers me so much is because Perez is such a better artist than Liefeld, and this feels like trampling on consecrated ground. But it’s not just the art; the writing on this issue is awful as well (my friends at Retcon Punch can point out the inconsistincies much better than I can), and the changes are not only unnecessary but are haphazard and make the story worse (Oh, Slade took the serum because he got beaten within an inch of his life. Oh Slade lost his eye because he got beaten within an inch of his life. Oh Adeline and Joseph are out there somewhere threatening to kill him)

If Liefeld had copied one or two panels, I’d have easily thought of it as an homage and called it a day. If Liefeld had stuck closer to the original story than I would have had at least understood why he’d copy the original art so closely. But for him to copy the old art but put half the scenes in a completely new context in a vastly altered origin story just rubs me the wrong way. It reeks of laziness, as if Liefeld just thought “Hey, someone already drew half this story, let’s see how he did it and save myself some time! I’ll be on the golf course by noon!”

And maybe I’m wrong and DC Editorial had something to do with it (considering Liefeld’s numerous complaints against them), but still, I can’t help but feel offended by this.  It just really bugs me.
